Speaker: Tim Roughgarden Title / Affiliation: Associate Professor, Computer Science, Management Science, and Engineering Talk Abstract: Economists have studied the theory and practice of auctions for decades. How can computer science contribute? Using the ongoing U.S. FCC double-auction for wireless spectrum as a case study, I'll illustrate the many answers: novel auction formats, algorithms for NP-hard problems, approximation guarantees for simple auctions, and communication complexity-based impossibility results. Biography: Tim Roughgarden is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and (by courtesy) Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He received a BS in Applied Mathematics from Stanford in 1997, and a PhD in Computer Science from Cornell in 2002. His research ...
We have compiled great shots from the Yoder & Frey Auction in Kissimmee Florida this past February. Many great changes were made, including the new sales ramp that is shown on the ground level as well as aerial footage. You will also get a brief glimpse of how many engines were being sold.

An auction designer faces an optimization problem with a twist. The designer's goal is to allocate resources effectively, but the input to this allocation problem is held by rational participants who may misrepresent their private values for personal gain. To combat this manipulation one might ask for allocation rules that are incentive compatible, so that it is in the best interest of each participant to report truthfully. In general, however, it can be difficult to design auctions that are both truthful and computationally tractable, especially in complex settings where many related items are to be sold simultaneously. One possible solution to these issues would be a general method for converting approximation algorithms into truthful mechanisms. Such a transformation would allow de...
