Colin Rowat is a Lecturer in Economics at the University of Birmingham. TEDx University of Birmingham showcased nine high-impact talks from various speakers based around the theme of Throwing Caution to the Wind -- or in other words, risk taking. It was the first TEDx event the University has ever held and after a highly successful event we hope there will be many more. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx prog...
Buying A Model Steam Plant Online - In The Workshop - This can often be a good way to buy model steam engines & accessories , but it can also be a very disappointing experience. When all that you have to look at is a photograph, this is often not enough to get an idea of the mechanical condition of the steam engines or boilers that you are buying. This particular steam plant has many problems, most of them are small problems but collectively rectifying the faults is a time consuming and can therefore be an expensive job.

Speaker: Tim Roughgarden Title / Affiliation: Associate Professor, Computer Science, Management Science, and Engineering Talk Abstract: Economists have studied the theory and practice of auctions for decades. How can computer science contribute? Using the ongoing U.S. FCC double-auction for wireless spectrum as a case study, I'll illustrate the many answers: novel auction formats, algorithms for NP-hard problems, approximation guarantees for simple auctions, and communication complexity-based impossibility results. Biography: Tim Roughgarden is an Associate Professor of Computer Science and (by courtesy) Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University. He received a BS in Applied Mathematics from Stanford in 1997, and a PhD in Computer Science from Cornell in 2002. His research ...

SOUNDBITE (English) Nicola Borri, Assistant Professor of Economics at LUISS university: "Today Italy was auctioning both short term and long term bonds and the results of the auction, I think, are very positive. The yield on Italian bonds dropped significantly, especially on the short term maturities. On the three-years bond the decline in the yield was about 200 basis points, with respect to the previous auction, so it is a significant reduction." 6. Electronic marketplaces clear trillions of dollars worth of transactions annually. Google processes 40,000 search queries per second by running ad auctions for search keywords. Online shopping, auctions, and dating have become facts of life. How are such marketplaces designed? Mathematical models underlie the algorithms powering many of these marketplaces, and massive amounts of data allow "market engineers" to make their marketplaces more efficient, but such data also leads to complex computational challenges. In his talk, Ali Hortaçsu will outline some of these economic principles and provide some examples of them at work. Ali Hortaçsu is the Ralph and Mary Otis Isham Professor of Economics and the College at the University of Chicago. He is one of the first economists to systematicall...
